“Jan Krist is a singer songwriter whose music has an uncanny way of cutting to the heart of a topic and providing the listener with food for thought,”  wrote Bob Darden in Billboard Magazine.  “Her talent as a songwriter equals – if not surpasses – her vocal gifts.“

Darden describes Krist’s voice as being  “…somewhere between Joni Mitchell and Kate Bush, but it’s all Jan Krist. Unreservedly recommended.”

”Jan Krist makes soul searching more fun than it should be…” Entertainment Weekly Magazine

Jan has twice been a finalist in the New Folk Competition, held each year at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Kerrville, Texas. She has also won four Detroit Metro Music Awards, having been nominated for that honor 13 times, before moving to Fort Wayne Indiana, where she and husband, drummer, Alan Finkbeiner, currently reside.

Jan Krist was raised on rock, and cut her teeth on folk music of the 60’s and 70’s.  Her work travels from themes of social justice, to self examination, relationship, and regret, all while maintaining a sense of wonder, and a seed of hope.
She calls her style, “Midwest urban folk.”

A veteran of the club scene in metro Detroit, where she was deemed “the best right hand in Detroit” and “ the groove queen”, it’s Jan’s writing she is most noted for.

Jan regularly performs with the Yellow Room Gang, a celebrated songwriting collective based in southeast Michigan, as a duo, with Jim Bizer, and with her new band, Diamonds in the Rust ( Annie and Rod Capps, Jim Bizer, Alan Finkbeiner, and Jan Krist)

She is a respected songwriting workshop teacher, and teaches a songwriting workshop at the Grunewald Guild in Leavenworth, Washington twice a year. She has taught songwriting at the Lamb’s Retreat for Songwriters in Harbor Springs, and for Calvin College’s Faith and Writing, and Faith and others.

Jan is also is a gifted visual artist/ illustrator, with a BFA from IPFW, and a concentration in ceramics. She is currently serving a 6 year term as a practicing artist on the Fort Wayne Public Art Commission.
